Word of Mouth TV caught up with Holly Ringland on her whirlwind tour of Australia. Her novel, The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, was one of the debut sensations of the year. Holly talks with us about the language of flowers and what it feels like to have your writing dreams come true. Fantasy author Garth Nix loves food - lots of different types of food - but put his back to the wall (or a tree as was the case with the Kids & YA Festival), and he plumps for bangers and mash - an all-time favourite for many. So we have used the Taste recipe with red onion gravy below because we used the Cleaver's gluten free mint and lamb sausages and red onion gravy (with red wine) because red wine goes so well with lamb. We hope you enjoy them as much as we did.

Word of Mouth TV had such a great time interviewing authors at Writing NSW's Kids & Young Adult Festival. The events were packed but we still managed to persuade authors Jaclyn Moriarty, Garth Nix and Belinda Murrell to spare some time to talk about their latest books and share their book and food tips. Everyone else must have had a great time too, because the event trended fourth on Twitter for the day, no mean feat.

In honour of our coverage of Writing NSW's Kids & Young Adult Festival, this episode’s Iconic Literary Food Moment is devoted to the children’s classic Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. Millions remember the moment when Parish orphan Oliver Twist returns with his bowl of gruel to Mr Bumble and says “Please Sir, I want some more?” In this scene, Dickens plays our emotions like a fiddle.

I have always thought that Jaclyn Moriarty has one of the freshest and most original voices in Australian children’s literature and so was eager to read her latest children’s fantasy, beautifully presented as a hardback with whimsical illustrations by Kelly Canby. The book did not disappoint – it was a sparkling delight from beginning to end, with lots of unexpected discoveries, wondrous encounters and madcap adventures.

Jaclyn Moriarty loves chocolate and she wrote much of The Extremely Inconvenient Adventures of Bronte Mettlesome while sitting in her gorgeous local chocolate shop. So it is not surprising that chocolate features heavily in the book and there is special mention of chocolate brownies. Jaclyn says she switches chocolate brownie recipes all the time, always looking for the ultimate one.

Authors appearing at NSW Writing's Kids & Young Adult Festival had been on a pre-festival childrens-reading binge, so there was no shortage of recommendations for those seeking a gift to inspire a young one. Garth Nix, Jaclyn Moriarty and Belinda Murrell offer a delightful and diverse selection of books to entertain children (and adults) of all genders. I'll be reading these myself.
