The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart – Holly Ringland

Kate's review
An astonishingly assured debut, The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart is a story of love, loss, betrayal and the redemptive power of storytelling. It is both heart-breaking and life-affirming. A coming-of-age story with a vividly evocative Australian setting, this novel follows the story of Alice Hart who must learn to escape the shadows of an abusive father in order to build a life for herself. The Australian landscape, and its strange and beautiful flora, has a potent presence in the novel.

Oliver’s gruel with a 21st century twist

Iconic Literary Food Moments
In honour of our coverage of Writing NSW's Kids & Young Adult Festival, this episode’s Iconic Literary Food Moment is devoted to the children’s classic Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. Millions remember the moment when Parish orphan Oliver Twist returns with his bowl of gruel to Mr Bumble and says “Please Sir, I want some more?” In this scene, Dickens plays our emotions like a fiddle.

Kids & YA Fest – Adventures of Bronte Mettlestone

Kate's review
I have always thought that Jaclyn Moriarty has one of the freshest and most original voices in Australian children’s literature and so was eager to read her latest children’s fantasy, beautifully presented as a hardback with whimsical illustrations by Kelly Canby. The book did not disappoint – it was a sparkling delight from beginning to end, with lots of unexpected discoveries, wondrous encounters and madcap adventures.

Kids & YA Fest – author recommendations

Recommended reads
Authors appearing at NSW Writing's Kids & Young Adult Festival had been on a pre-festival childrens-reading binge, so there was no shortage of recommendations for those seeking a gift to inspire a young one. Garth Nix, Jaclyn Moriarty and Belinda Murrell offer a delightful and diverse selection of books to entertain children (and adults) of all genders. I'll be reading these myself.

The Lace Weaver – Lauren Chater

Sarah's review
A charming debut novel from author Lauren Chater, The Lace Weaver is set in Estonia, just prior to World War II. Squeezed between the two major powers of the Soviet Union and Germany, Estonia is coveted by both. Maintaining independence is all but impossible, and the Estonians endure great hardship as two evil empires - the Russians, then Germans - occupy their land. The people take great heart from their traditions, particularly lace weaving.

The Lace Weaver – Lauren Chater

Kate's review
A heart-wrenching novel of love, war and resistance set in Estonia in the 1940s, The Lace Weaver tells the story of two very different young women and their struggle to survive in a country caught between two of the greatest evils of the 20th century: Stalin’s Red Army and Hitler’s Third Reich. This is a novel of love and war, heartbreak and hope, and the bonds between women, delicate as lace and yet as unbreakable as steel.

News bites: Dennis Jones appoints liquidator

News bites
Industry stalwart Dennis Jones & Associates has appointed a liquidator. As the leading independent distributor for small publishers and self-publishers, the news will comes as a shock to many. If Australian Society of Authors members who are creditors would like the ASA to act on their behalf, they can fill out a form on the ASA website. The ASA also has a press release on its site.

The Beast’s Heart – Leife Shallcross

Kate's review
The Beast's Heart by debut Australian author Leife Shallcross is a retelling of the classic French fairy-tale ‘La Belle et la Bête’, told from the perspective of the Beast. Like many lovers of fairy-tales, it is one of my own personal favourites and I have drawn upon its symbols and structures in my own novel, The Beast’s Garden, which is set in Nazi Germany.
